Every Bali camera roll has the same photo: the T-Rex cliff at Kelingking Beach, blue water, someone's back to the camera. That's Nusa Penida, the island 45 minutes off Bali's east coast, and it's the day trip almost everyone on a gap year or schoolies trip ends up doing.
Here's what it actually costs, what's worth your money, and which part of the day is the one to put on your registry.
The short version
A solid Nusa Penida day trip runs about A$90 to A$150 per person all-in from Bali. That covers the fast boat, an island driver or tour, lunch and the big sights. Add snorkelling with manta rays and you're closer to A$150 to A$200. It's one of the pricier days of a Bali trip, and one of the only ones nobody regrets.

Getting there: the fast boat
Boats leave from Sanur, and this is where Nusa Penida days are won or lost. The crossing takes about 45 minutes.
- Return fast boat: roughly A$25 to A$40
- Book the morning boats (7:30 to 8:30am). The sights are 30 to 60 minutes' drive apart on rough roads, so a late start means skipping half the island.
- Seas can get lumpy. If you're a queasy traveller, sit at the back and skip the big breakfast.
Most organised tours include the boat, which is honestly the easiest way to do it the first time.
Tour vs DIY: what each costs
Organised day tour (about A$100 to A$150 all-in). Boat, air-conditioned car, driver who knows the photo queues, lunch. You'll hit the west-island big three: Kelingking, Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach, usually with Crystal Bay for a swim. For a first visit, this is the move.
DIY (about A$70 to A$100 all-in). Boat plus a scooter (around A$10 to A$15 a day) or a private driver (about A$50 to A$70 for the car). Cheaper, more freedom, but Penida's roads are steep, potholed and not the place to learn to ride. If you wouldn't scooter confidently in Canggu traffic, don't start here.
The sights, ranked honestly
Kelingking Beach. The famous one, and it earns it. The lookout is free once you're there (small entry fee, a couple of dollars). The climb down to the sand takes about 45 minutes each way on a steep dirt track. Most people don't do it; the view from the top is the photo anyway.
Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong. Five minutes apart, so tours pair them. A natural rock arch around a perfect circle of ocean, and a natural infinity pool beside it. Quick stops, great photos.
Crystal Bay. The swimming stop. Calm, clear, good for a float after a hot morning of viewpoints. Snorkel gear rents for a few dollars.
Diamond Beach (east island). Arguably the most beautiful beach on Penida, but it's the opposite end of the island. You can't do the west three and Diamond well in one day. Either pick a west-island day, or stay a night and split the island in two.
The manta rays
This is the upgrade that turns a good day into the best day of the trip. Snorkelling tours run out to Manta Point and Gamat Bay, and swimming next to a three-metre manta is the kind of moment people are still talking about at Christmas.

Mantas are wild animals and sightings aren't guaranteed, but Manta Point is one of the most reliable spots in Indonesia year-round.

Where to stay for a Nusa Penida trip
Most people day-trip from Bali, and the smart base is Sanur: the boats leave from there, so you're not doing a 6am taxi race across the island. Browse Sanur stays on Booking.com and look near the beach path; hostels and guesthouses run about A$15 to A$40 a night.

Total: about A$180 for the full version, or around A$110 if you skip the snorkel.
